Manitoba SwimAbility Summer Camp Instructor Description

Manitoba SwimAbility, a not-for-profit organization that provides one-to-one swimming instruction to children with special needs, invites applications for Summer Camp Instructors.

This is a three week camp (124 hours, Monday – Friday), August 14-18, August 21-25 & August 28-September 1, 2017 including 8 hours of training on a date TBD. Activities during the three-week camp include archery, swimming, bowling, soccer, and arts & crafts. The Summer Camp will be held at Westdale Community Centre for Weeks 1 & 2 and the West Portage YMCA for Week 3.

Under the direction and supervision of the Summer Camp Director, the Summer Camp Instructor is responsible for providing one-to-one (in some cases one-on-two) leadership, guidance and support to children with special needs. For Week 1, each Summer Camp Instructor will be paired with one or two children for the week. For Week 2 & 3, each Summer Camp Instructor will be paired with two children; one camper for the morning session, and one camper for the afternoon session.

Must be available 8:15 am – 4:15 pm Monday – Friday, August 14 – September 1, 2017 for the camp and 8 hours of training on a date TBD.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of all campers throughout the camp
  • Provide leadership, guidance, supervision, assistance and actively participate in all aspects of the camp
  • Become knowledgeable of the specific needs of the campers and adapt activities accordingly
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines and emergency procedures associated with the camp
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and ensure the facility is kept clean and organized
  • Communicate with Camp Director regarding any concerns, updates, challenges


  • 16 years of age or older
  • Must love working with children
  • Current First Aid and CPR C
  • Ability to teach and lead various recreational activities
  • Mental and physical ability to deal with high stress situations and work well under pressure in a quickly changing environment
  • Experience working with youth with special needs is an asset
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Experience teaching swimming lessons would be an asset
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate and/or Lifesaving Society Instructor Certificate would be assets

Wage – $13.00 ($14.00 for returning instructors)
